1. The aphid Aphis fabae (Scopoli) is facultatively tended by Lasius niger (Linnaeus) ants. Previously, we found that A. fabae colonies can be made up of several clones, and that clones display significant differences in the composition of their honeydew sugars, especially in the amount of the ant attractant sugar melezitose that they produce. 2. These clonal differences could greatly impact the strength of the mutualistic interaction with ants as well as the aphids' fitness. 3. Hence, the aim of this study was to compare the fitness of different A. fabae clones that differed in their melezitose secretion, and whether or not they were tended by ants. 4. Individual fitness indices, colony growth, and alate production of single‐clone aphid colonies were analysed. 5. The results demonstrate that the fitness consequences of ant attendance critically depend on an interaction between levels of melezitose production. In particular, we show that high‐melezitose secreting clones produce fewer alates and hence might have a lower dispersal ability in the presence of ants. 6. Furthermore, these data confirm previous evidence that ant attendance is costly and results in the production of fewer apterae.  相似文献

Background  

In the past years the Smith-Waterman sequence comparison algorithm has gained popularity due to improved implementations and rapidly increasing computing power. However, the quality and sensitivity of a database search is not only determined by the algorithm but also by the statistical significance testing for an alignment. The e-value is the most commonly used statistical validation method for sequence database searching. The CluSTr database and the Protein World database have been created using an alternative statistical significance test: a Z-score based on Monte-Carlo statistics. Several papers have described the superiority of the Z-score as compared to the e-value, using simulated data. We were interested if this could be validated when applied to existing, evolutionary related protein sequences.  相似文献

Cliona delitrix is a very destructive coral-excavating sponge in Caribbean coral reef systems, particularly for Montastraea species. Little is known about how these excavating sponges propagate across coral reefs. In this study a hypothesis was tested that coral breakage caused by the bioeroding activity facilitates the asexual propagation of this sponge and in turn favors the spread of the most aggressive sponge genotypes. An allozyme analysis, involving 12 loci systems of 52 sponge individuals from a total of 13 Montastraea heads, found that no two sponges possessed identical multi-locus genotypes. Contrary to the pattern expected for fragmenting species, the incidence of clonality and asexual propagation at the population level was minimal. The lack of correlation between genetic and physical distances for the studied sponges also suggests that population maintenance appears to derive from larval dispersal, with a spatial range of dispersal larger than the average distance between the coral heads (10–102 m).  相似文献

In a simulation study different designs for a pure line pig population were compared for efficiency of mapping QTL using the variance component method. Phenotypes affected by a Mendelian QTL, a paternally expressed QTL, a maternally expressed QTL or by a QTL without an effect were simulated. In all alternative designs 960 progeny were phenotyped. Given the limited number of animals there is an optimum between the number of families and the family size. Estimation of Mendelian and parentally expressed QTL is more efficient in a design with large family sizes. Too small a number of sires should be avoided to minimize chances of sires to be non-segregating. When a large number of families is used, the number of haplotypes increases which reduces the accuracy of estimating the QTL effect and thereby reduces the power to show a significant QTL and to correctly position the QTL. Dense maps allow for smaller family size due to exploitation of LD-information. Given the different possible modes of inheritance of the QTL using 8 to16 boars, two litters per dam was optimal with respect to determining significance and correct location of the QTL for a data set consisting of 960 progeny. The variance component method combining linkage disequilibrium and linkage analysis seems to be an appropriate choice to analyze data sets which vary in marker density and which contain complex family structures.  相似文献

Plants detect the presence of neighbouring vegetation by monitoring changes in the ratio of red (R) to far‐red (FR) wavelengths (R:FR) in ambient light. Reductions in R:FR are perceived by the phytochrome family of plant photoreceptors and initiate a suite of developmental responses termed the shade avoidance syndrome. These include increased elongation growth of stems and petioles, enabling plants to overtop competing vegetation. The majority of shade avoidance experiments are performed at standard laboratory growing temperatures (>20°C). In these conditions, elongation responses to low R:FR are often accompanied by reductions in leaf development and accumulation of plant biomass. Here we investigated shade avoidance responses at a cooler temperature (16°C). In these conditions, Arabidopsis thaliana displays considerable low R:FR‐mediated increases in leaf area, with reduced low R:FR‐mediated petiole elongation and leaf hyponasty responses. In Landsberg erecta, these strikingly different shade avoidance phenotypes are accompanied by increased leaf thickness, increased biomass and an altered metabolite profile. At 16°C, low R:FR treatment results in the accumulation of soluble sugars and metabolites associated with cold acclimation. Analyses of natural genetic variation in shade avoidance responses at 16°C have revealed a regulatory role for the receptor‐like kinase ERECTA.  相似文献

Abstract

The lymphocyte stimulation test (LST) is an in vitro corollary of in vivo cell‐mediated immunity. We have analyzed LST results from 32 dogs covering a 16‐month time span. Two mitogens (plant lectins) were used in the LST, phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and concanavalin A (Con A) with comparable results. All dogs exhibited a seasonal variation in LST results using both mitogens. The dogs were either controls or were in one of five groups that received whole‐body gamma ray irradiation from a 60CO source. There was little effect of irradiation except on the mean levels of oscillation. Few differences were noted among groups. The estimated mean times of peak activity in the LST ranged from July 19‐August 2 for PHA and from July 18‐August 15 for Con A. The times of peak of individual dogs for both mitogens were predominantly in the calendar quarter June 21 ‐September 20, and were, therefore, not randomly distributed throughout the year. The implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Dear Editor, It has been known since the work of Francis Darwin that, in response to a reduction in atmospheric relative humidity (rh), stomatal aperture decreases. Screening for Arabidopsis mutants compromised in stomatal responses to reduced rh resulted in the identification of two genes, OST1 and ABA2, that are involved in stomatal response to low rh conditions. Interestingly both encode proteins previously known to be involved in ABA signaling (Xie et al., 2006, and references therein). These findings strongly suggested that, at least in part, the stomatal response to low rh is mediated by ABA and the intracellular ABA signaling pathway. Our most recent data show that low rh-induced stomatal closure can pro- ceed by guard cell autonomous ABA synthesis (Bauer et al., 2013),  相似文献
